The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is the Australian Government’s entry-level, in-home aged care program. It helps older people manage everyday tasks so they can keep living safely and independently at home.
Generally, Australian citizens or those holding permanent residency aged 65 and over (50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) who need some occasional or low-level support with daily living.
Contact My Aged Care — online at myagedcare.gov.au or by phone on 1800 200 422 — to arrange an assessment.
Most people complete a short screening; some are referred for a home, phone, or video assessment through the Single Assessment System. You’ll then receive Notice of Decision letter confirming which services you’re approved for.
Everyday support like domestic assistance, transport, meal preparation, personal care, allied health, home maintenance, and social support — plus planned respite for carers. In Augusta and Busselton, Curtin Heritage at Home facilitates a Friendship Club that runs Wednesday and Friday each week. Call our South West team for more information Tel: (08) 9469 0060.
CHSP is heavily subsidised by government funding. Most services involve a modest client contribution. The cost will vary dependant on the service type.
CHSP is entry-level — typically one or two services, faster to access, more simple care management. Support at Home is for people with more complex needs, offering a fully assessed funding budget and dedicated care management.
Yes — unlike Support at Home’s single-provider model, CHSP allows you to mix and match services from different providers.
Wait times vary by location and service type. While CHSP is generally positioned as faster to access than Support at Home, it is not guaranteed. Providers can help you with more information on wait times.
You can request a more comprehensive assessment and move to Support at Home, generally while maintaining continuity of the care you receive via CHSP.
Yes — CHSP includes planned respite services to give carers a break.
Generally your ongoing services sit within one funding program. There are allowances to have some CHSP services whilst receiving Support at Home under guidelines stated by the Government.
CHSP has been extended to 30 June 2029.
